14 February

St Valentine’s Day. A day of high profit for florists, chocolate makers and purveyors of cards with hearts all over them. A day of misery for every young teenager who doesn’t get a card, even one from their Mum or Dad.

Three separate Valentines are honoured on 14 February, and little is known about any of them and the first reference to Valentine and romance was made much later by Chaucer in the Fourteenth Century in his poem Parlement of Foules.

For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.

“For this was on St. Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”

Today concentrate on one of the most important mates in your life – You. Unless you are content and happy with yourself you will never achieve contentment and happiness with anyone else. Find some time today to spend time with yourself. Ask yourself what you would like to do, to eat, to drink. Where would you love to go on holiday or live? Get to know yourself a little today and enjoy your own company. You are the one mate who will be with you for all of your life. Best to get to know them and love them.
