13 February

I heard on the radio yesterday that, according to the Meteorological Office the end of February officially marks the end of winter. By now, even in the north of England, there are signs that Spring is on its way. The snowdrops are starting to peep through and the catkins are floating in the wind.

There may be huge bunches of daffodils and tulips in the shops but today I want you to bring in some twigs. Pussy willow, dogwood, anything that is in bud. Place them in a vase in the sunlight and watch the buds open. When you can see them up close in your own home you are so much more aware of the process of nature, the arrival of spring. They also make an interesting alternative to the endless tulips…. lovely though they are.
