We all know the story of the swan, calm and serene gliding across the water and battling her legs as fast as she can underneath. When I had three children under three (twins and a toddler) people would come up to me and say “I don’t know how you manage.” The truth was I wasn’t managing, I gave the appearance of managing and was slowing falling apart inside. Fortunately I had a friend who spotted this and I was finally able to ask for the help I needed.
Don’t be that swan. There is no shame in asking for help or in saying no to requests for help from other people. You are not an endless font of energy, your body and soul need replenishing too. Like a battery operated toy, when the battery runs out the toy will stop, so will you. However, once you run down it will take a lot more than a couple of AA batteries to get you going again.
So as you move toward the middle of the first month of the New Year take stock of your batteries. Are you taking the time to recharge them or are they running down faster than you can fill them up again?
Are their responsibilities that you can let go? If not then now is the time to source support. Some things are more complex than others, it may take months before you can feel confident to let go or to have found extra help but if you don’t start now then you are one step closer to running out of charge.
What ways can you recharge your batteries? Over the course of this month we will explore the ways that we can refill our spirit and body to ensure that we have enough to give back to the rest of the world without turning into that swan.
