Becoming a candle

Becoming a candle

7th December 2015

Do you have an Advent Candle? I think I have had an Advent Candle every year for as long as I can remember. Some years we have forgotten to light it every day and we have to have a “long burn” to catch up.

I love candlelight and have always had an Advent Wreath too. Some of you will be old enough to remember the two wire coathangers and some tinsel that constituted the standard Blue Peter Advent wreath. In retrospect it must have been one heck of a fire risk! Over the years I have experimented with twigs and greenery and tend now to make a door style wreath and place the candles in the middle. One each Sunday and a fifth for Christmas Day.

Today, as we enter another war, as innocent civilians will be killed, injured and rendered homeless or refugees, light a candle. It doesn’t have to be an Advent candle, you don’t have to have any faith. But light a candle and be part of the light that can change the world.

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.
